Over the past year I’ve been teaching chair yoga for the Philly School District, through a grant for the early childhood education Headstart Program. It has taken me into the communities of Southwest Philly to North Philly. The classes are sweet, as a teacher often challenging, some days, like today, no one shows. This work is some of the most rewarding work I’ve done. I believe in the possibilities of greatness, and that even a little bit of this practice can shelter you from great sorrow.

Moon Glow Flow: Moon Salutations and Yin Yoga

Lately I have been asking myself: what would it be like to let go of the need to be somebody and instead open up to simply being?

As these new sparks of change make their way through my synapses, I am humbled to be leading Moon Glow Flow: A Moon Salutations and Yin Yoga workshop. This is a practice of being with the big questions without actually having to ask them, and instead, simply feeling, breathing, and yes, being.

Please glow with me:

As I wrap up another Brand New Beginner’s Series (Level 2), I am reminded of the importance of the beginner’s mind: to stay curious and to always be learning.

The next Level 1 Series begins 9/8 and runs until 10/27: Tuesdays from 7:30-9:00 p.m. at Wake Up Yoga Fairmount.

Register here.

Practice = 99% failure, 1% success

unceasing curiosity wins the day

sustained enthusiasm is a great boon

be happy with the tiniest of gains.”

My work is loving the world.

Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird —

equal seekers of sweetness.

Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums.

Here the clam deep in the speckled sand.

Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?

Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect?

Let me keep my mind on what matters,

which is my work,

which is mostly standing still and learning to be

astonished.

The phoebe, the delphinium.

The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture.

Which is mostly rejoicing, since all ingredients are here,

which is gratitude, to be given a mind and a heart

and these body-clothes,

a mouth with which to give shouts of joy

to the moth and the wren, to the sleepy dug-up clam,

telling them all, over and over, how it is

that we live forever.
